{"id":898,"date":"2017-05-27T08:59:32","date_gmt":"2017-05-27T07:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exponentialdecay.co.uk\/blog\/?p=898"},"modified":"2025-06-26T18:14:30","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T18:14:30","slug":"brainscape-flashcards-for-digital-preservation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exponentialdecay.co.uk\/blog\/brainscape-flashcards-for-digital-preservation\/","title":{"rendered":"Brainscape Flashcards: For Digital Preservation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Digital preservation is massively multi-disciplinary and it can take time to be able to grasp the skills and concepts <em>cross-discipline<\/em>, wherever you began your own training.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How do we develop the skills of new folk entering the field today?<\/p>\n<p>How do we <em>re-skill<\/em> those who have worked in GLAM a long time in disciplines other than digital preservation?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These are questions I think about a lot. I dig into some of those thoughts below and take a look at one approach I worked on for students and very early-career professionals with flashcards using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainscape.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brainscape<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Training, and training course can support:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demystifying concepts.<\/li>\n<li>Jargon busting.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a lingua franca and a <a href=\"http:\/\/openpreservation.org\/blog\/2016\/05\/24\/while-were-on-the-subject-a-few-more-points-of-interest-about-the-siegfrieddroid-analysis-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">level playing field.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Outreach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are of course, all very closely related ideas.<\/p>\n<p>What I think is most important is that as new colleagues leave university, apprenticeship, or similar; and already-colleagues move sideways in an organisation; they&#8217;re given the opportunity to hit the ground running and I think that means developing an understanding of terminology and tools that we&#8217;re using every day at the coalface of our work.<\/p>\n<p>There are courses (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpconline.org\/training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DPTP<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalpreservation.gov\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DPOE<\/a>) that can help, and I&#8217;m sure there are exceptional university modules as well.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve taken an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainscape.com\/packs\/digital-preservation-9031147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">app<\/a>-based approach using the strengths of an existing tool called Brainscape to trial putting some of this knowledge into the hands of anyone with an Android phone or iPhone.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Brainscape?<\/h2>\n<p>Brainscape is a flashcard app for smartphones that uses a technique called confidence based repetition.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Brainscape - Learn Faster with Smart Online Flashcards\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mAxlGrrEsYs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Users look at a new flashcard, and rate how well they know it, and then move onto the next. The ratings help the app to create a distribution for the repetition of knowledge so the less someone knows something the more it will appear until it becomes more well learned over time.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been using the app for a number of years for learning language and trivia. I like the app a lot and I like the presentation of it.
